Meryl Streep and Don Gummer, have been separated for six years

the actress’s representative confirmed on Saturday.

In a statement to People, the representative said, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for over 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen to live separate lives.”

CNN has reached out to the actor’s publicist for comment.

The three-time Oscar winner and sculptor Gummer first married in 1978. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last month.

Streep and Gummer were photographed together at several events in recent years, but their private lives were largely kept out of the press.

In 2002, Streep told Old Vogue, “There is no road map on how to raise a family: it’s always a big conversation.” But I have an overall need to work and have a big bond of love in my life. I can’t imagine leaving one without the other.”

Streep paid tribute to Gummer in her acceptance speech for Best Actress at the Oscars in 2012 for her performance in “The Iron Lady.”

“First, I’m going to thank Don, because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play music, and I want him to know that the thing I value most in my life, you gave it to me,” Streep said at the time.

The couple now have four adult children, a son, Henry, and three daughters, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.
